A group of music fans opened Tipitina's on January 14, 1977, at the corner of Napoleon and Tchoupitoulas in Uptown New Orleans — built around a single idea: give Professor Longhair a place to play. The revered R&B pianist performed there until his death in 1980, and the club that bears his song's name has been the spiritual hub of New Orleans music ever since. Now owned by the funk band Galactic, Tips is still where the city comes to dance.
